John Menard Jr. started building post-frame buildings in 1959 to pay for his college education. Menard Cashway Lumber was the original name of Menards. The name “Cashway Lumber”, which was dropped in the mid-1980s and the business was renamed Menards.

Menards’ third and fourth distribution centers were opened in Holiday City, Ohio and Shelby, Iowa in 2007. They are 669,000 sq.ft (62,200m2) and 735,000. sq.ft (68,300m2) respectively.
